([email protected]) want to see what goes on in a junior course? new video many thanks to charles broadway for producing this superb video neptune youth groups challenge yourself in 2018 - join one of our youth groups the orwell is a great place to learn to sail, as it is a wide river, with plenty of space to learn new skills and to practise them. the tidal nature of the orwell makes it an interesting environment, with challenging conditions at times, and a range of local wild-life to intrigue us all.our team of instructors and volunteers will support your progress and help us to maintain high levels of safety at all times. this is essential on a busy river. we are about to begin planning for the 2018 season and last year's youth group members will automatically receive their invitation to join again early in the new year. our groups begin with those children who are 10 years and above. if you have previously sailed, you may be able to join a more advanced group, though we do try to keep those of similar ages together. our advanced group includes those who are working towards qualifying as instructors in their own right. neptune youth groups are likely to be well-subscribed again, with anna, our new membership secretary, doing a very good job for us. do contact her ([email protected])soon to reserve a place for your child - the groups are very popular with both girls and boys. season round-up more arthur ransome events it's always been very important that neptune sailing reaches out to all of our local schools. this year, as well as working with our regular school groups, we have been pleased to organise events for east bergholt, stutton and tattingstone primary schools. these have been very well received and were combined with writing and painting projects in several of the schools. we were pleased to be able to rig the decorated sails they had produced when the school groups made their visits. we will be continuing to involve the remaining local schools early next season. this year, we have been aided by strong support from babergh district council, who have helped us in our key objectives. many thanks to kate and the team for all of their support and encouragement throughout. as the arthur ransome events have involved a very large number of people during the year, we look forward to video screening of the events in the new year. junior and adult courses 2017 the largest increase in attendances this year has been with adult courses, where we have been more successful than for many years. neptune's team have seen larger numbers joining us during the warmer months, and we have had several very large groups for level 1 and 2 courses. powerboat courses have also seen a many more students and the demand has continued through out the season, including two courses in october ; normally too cold for most. our full programme of junior summer courses took place with great success over the summer holiday period. we had more places than ever, as we included an extra week, and many courses had few spaces remaining. our aim is to challenge young people to take charge and move on, very often taking them outside of their comfort zone by experiencing a range of craft. we are proud to have heled many overcome their fears and develop the confidence so essential to sailing well and improving skills. watch out for next year's program. arthur ransome celebration at pin mill what a superb event - did you miss it? neptune sailing was an integral part of this musical, literal, photographic and activity day, providing the opportunity to live the actual 'swallows and amazons' experience! in the event, we took 65 people out on the water for some taster sessions, before the water finally drained away and we had to leave for woolverstone. we began as soon as we could sail to the pontoon at pin mill and some of our instructors were so busy they never got back ashore again! feedback from all was very positive and we have to thank our brilliant shore team for organising the new sailors with buoyancy aids and delivering them to the dinghies. we will have to think about putting on some family sailing activities over the coming months. the parents enjoyed seeing their childrens' reactions to the experience, as well as taking the helm themselves. want to get involved? - qualified instructors and volunteers get involved in 2017 neptune is dependent on a small team of qualified staff, which is ably supported by a wide range of volunteers, who take on many different tasks, such as serving on the management team, organising and running courses, helping with maintenance, or just helping out with our groups on the water. each sailing group is organised by an rya senior instructor, with lots of support from other instructors, and we are particularly keen to hear from dinghy instructors , especially senior instructors who are keen to help us. for those helping on the water, we will aim to develop your skills by providing training opportunities. if you are interested in joining our team, and we hope that you will be, please do get in touch ([email protected]) . we have activities running on most afternoons and evenings, and would be very pleased to hear from you. who are neptune sailing?
